2014 CN LO MEJOR DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD RECIPIENTS

Through Lo Mejor de Nuestra Comunidad Awards, Comite Noviembre recognizes outstanding individuals who are the unsung heroes of our community. These awards honor Puerto Ricans whose pride in their heritage and strength of character have empowered themselves and inspired others to make a significant impact on our community. Lo Mejor recipients are chosen by members of CN by nominations that were submitted by the community.

CN is proud to announce the 2014 Lo Mejor recipients: Melba Olmeda-Amaro, volunteer for 100 Hispanic Women and women’s issues advocate; Carlos Diaz, Founder, Stickball Hall of Fame Museum; Dawn Diaz, founder, Milagros Day Worldwide; Maria Diaz Santiago, Volunteer for New York City Church of Christ-Bronx Region – Children’s Ministry Teacher and Comité Noviembre; Lourdes Garcia, volunteer and member of PRIDA, Vanessa Pastrano, member, Taino Nation and United Confederation of Taino People (UCTP); Jose Cheo Oliveras, Director, Teatro Circulo, Lucky Rivera, leader, Boricuas for a Positive Image and founder, Positive Workforce; Miluka Rivera, President, Kumaras Center for the Arts and Etiquette and author of Legado Puertorriqueño en Hollywood, and Pereta Rodriguez, community advocate and volunteer.

The Lo Mejor Awards will be presented on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at El Museo del Barrio in Manhattan on at 6PM.

For the past 28 years, Comité Noviembre, CN has celebrated Puerto Rican Heritage Month in this country. CN is a non-profit organization dedicated to commemorating and acknowledging the contributions Puerto Ricans have made to this city, state and nation. CN is composed of thirteen of the oldest and most prestigious Puerto Rican organizations in the country: ASPIRA of New York, el Museo del Barrio, Eugenio María de Hostos Community College, Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, El Puente, Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly, La Casa de la Herencia Puertorriqueña, La Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular in Puerto Rico, LatinoJustice: PRLDEF, Musica de Camara, National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, National Institute for Latino Policy, National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights – Justice Committee and the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration which serves in an advisory position. This coordinating body plans and promotes CN’s annual programs and events. The charge of CN is to create awareness of our rich culture, language, and heritage and to acknowledge and take ownership of it everyday but specifically during the month of November. Because of CN, November is our month to discuss all aspects and issues of our community – with respect, objectivity and pride. For twenty-eight years, CN, has created and developed programs all geared to the support and enhancement of educational opportunities and leadership development for Puerto Rican and Hispanic youth with a cultural twist. These programs are firmly rooted in the belief, that in order to succeed in life, you must pursue a higher education, give back to your community through volunteer efforts and know your cultural roots. On behalf of CN, I am proud to welcome you to our website which provides the history of CN, its mission, programs and goals. It is our hope that this website will serve as an educational vehicle to all those searching for information on Puerto Rican history and culture especially educators and students and that you will learn about Puerto Rican pioneers and heroes.
